Tampa Speeding Ticket Attorney are often asked about laser readings because many folks are frankly unfamiliar with lasers being used to identify the speeds of cars. Everyone knows about lasers being used in the medical and entertainment fields, but their use in detecting speeds of cars is somewhat foreign to most folks. Most people are far more familiar with police officers pacing them or using radars to detect people’s speeds. Tampa law enforcement agencies, most notably the Tampa Police Department and Florida Highway Patrol, are more commonly using lasers to identify speeders nowadays. Frankly, if you ask law enforcement officers they will attribute this to lasers being more accurate and even more importantly, lasers give them the ability to “target” a specific vehicle by specifically aiming the laser at that vehicle.
Tampa Speeding Ticket Attorney argue though that there is several shortcomings related to the accuracy of these lasers. Specifically, rain, fog and steam off of roads can affect the accuracy of lasers in determining the speed of a traveling vehicle. As you can imagine, days of pure dry conditions are somewhat limited in Florida, this is something we obviously must investigate when determining how to resolve one’s speeding ticket. The nature of lasers also require law enforcement officer to lift it to their face to “target it”. This results in them losing sight of the vehicle they’re targeting for a second. As you can imagine, this can be a significant factor when an individual is trying to target a specific vehicle on a busy interstate full of folks traveling quickly. If they’re forced to take their eyes off a vehicle for just a matter of seconds and then relocate that vehicle once they’ve targeted their laser, again this could affect identification of the actual speeding vehicle. Another primary shortcoming of lasers in determining speed limits is that they cannot be used through windshields or windows because of the nature of the laser. Lasers work by bouncing the laser off of another object and identifying how quickly the speed of the laser comes back. If a laser’s used through a window or windshield, the laser’s actually picking up the reflection off of that window or windshield. Thus, the laser is essentially rendered ineffective because of the shortcoming. An officer must stand outside of his vehicle to properly utilize the laser to properly detect one’s speed. These shortcomings are argued by our Tampa Speeding Ticket Attorneys nearly daily with great success especially in reducing and getting charges for speeding dropped in traffic court.
