The Court will generally permit an individual to buy out those hours for $10.00 an hour, so it is simply a matter of economics. The overwhelming majority of Tampa Bay Area Judges will permit an individual to buy out all the community service hour. It is worth noting though that some Judges will require an individual to complete a small number of hours through a specific program, like the Victim Impact Panel through Mothers against Drunk Driving or the Sheriff’s Work Detail. The Victim Impact Panel is a program where individuals, who have suffered first hand loses from drunk driving present their stories. It is generally only three (3) hours long. Many Judges will require an individual to complete a portion of hours with the Sheriff’s Work Detail, which essentially requires some sort of physical or manual labor for the good of the county. The most visible example of this is picking up garbage on the side of the road.
