How much does a Tampa divorce lawyer cost?

Tampa divorce lawyers are often asked about their fees.  Obviously, this is a very important factor for many individuals going through a divorce.  Divorces literally change someone’s financial situation indefinitely and it is important to consider this when retaining the services of a Tampa divorce lawyer.  As I have told countless potential clients, it doesn’t make good financial sense to spend all of someone’s life savings for a retainer for a divorce.

Frankly, Attorneys’ fees and costs vary among Tampa divorce lawyers.  Some attorneys handle family law matters on a flat fee, while others use an hourly basis.  For the overwhelming majority of Tampa family law cases, we charge an hourly rate.  As I usually explain, I would rather be paid based on how much time the case takes rather than some obscure number determined before the case even began.  The more complex and more contested the issues are during a divorce, the more the cost will be obviously.  Generally, a lawyer can give you an estimate for what the divorce will cost based on the information you provide him/her during your initial consultation. If children are involved in the divorce, the cost will generally go up since it will more likely result in more prolonged litigation.

It is worth noting in some situations the court will order one party to pay the other party’s fees and costs in a family law case.  This generally occurs when the financial situation of one party is far superior or one party has seriously delayed and prolonged litigation.  A prime example of one party delaying and prolonging litigation occurs when the party fails to attend hearings or comply with mandatory disclosure requirements in the case.  Courts generally do not award fees, but Tampa divorce lawyers must consider this issue during the progression of their case.
