Websites, like Avvo, are great tools for folks looking for attorneys, but of course it is only the first step. Our answer to this is simple – it is absolutely impossible to give serious, credible legal advice over the Internet with limited facts and circumstances afforded in the space offered by websites like Avoo. For example, when someone asked about a question involving a felony, the consequences are obviously serious. In Florida, the penalties will include at least potentially a year in prison, among other potential penalties. It is totally irresponsible to give legal advice based on 160 characters of font on a website when someone’s liberty is at stake. As an attorney, I believe we have an ethical obligation and duty to prevent fast food style legal advice like incurred by many websites.
Real legal vice requires a tremendous amount of information from the client to the attorney, questions and answers posed by both the attorney and client and most importantly, an opportunity to consider the unique facts and circumstances of every case. As I previously stated before, websites like Avvo or law guru simply do not provide that extensive opportunity to do the type of investigation and consideration required by legitimate, intelligent, and informed legal advice an attorney should provide.
